Houston Independent School District Cutting Over 414 Jobs

Angry employees packed into a Houston school board room last week only to hear bad news. Houston Independent School District trustees voted in favor of the superintendent's recommendation to cut 170 more jobs at the end of the school year. Fox News reports that with 170 more jobs being cut, the district is now eliminating a grand total of 414 positions.

While the majority of the 414 positions are in the district's administrative offices, 99 of the eliminated jobs are teaching positions. The reduction of positions comes in response to the district's $28 million dollar budget shortfall. The cutting of jobs is expected to save the school district $4.8 million dollars.

According to Houston Press, the teachers' union president Gayle Fallon called Superintendent Terry Grier "the employer from hell." This statement comes from teachers complaining about the district's recruiting practices and planned layoffs.

And while there seem to be no Houston Independent School District employees that are happy about the anticipated layoffs, there are some legal procedures that newly laid off employees can take to ensure that they are receiving at least some compensation.

FindLaw states that workers who become unemployed through no fault of their own, can apply to receive benefits from a state unemployment compensation fund until they find other work.

Employees who have been laid off will be able to receive unemployment benefits as long as he or she has enough tenure to be eligible under the Texas Workforce Commission. An experienced Houston employment lawyer can usually help employees who have been laid off or wrongfully discharged understand their legal rights in the unemployment process.
